Double dosage: Hill beats title rivals Brookes and Laverty

Monday, August 27 2012

Defending champion Tommy Hill doubled up on victories at Cadwell Park this afternoon after hunting down title rival Michael Laverty and then forcing his way ahead as fellow Title Fighter Josh Brookes fought through to claim third. The final two positions in the Showdown though remain wide open with eight riders still capable of securing the last slots at Donington Park.

Hill fired the Swan Yamaha into the lead on the opening lap as the pack streamed into Coppice, but Laverty was determined to not settle for second and pushed ahead into Park to put the Samsung Honda back at the front. Laverty held the lead but hunter Hill was shadowing his rival and he made a move down the inside into Coppice on the ninth lap to regain the advantage.

Brookes was eager to make amends after a difficult weekend for the Tyco Suzuki team and with a front row start he settled into fourth over the opening laps, before making a move on third placed Alex Lowes into Barn on the ninth lap. Hill had edged ahead but Brookes was closing on Laverty and again repeated a move into Barn just five laps later to fire the Tyco Suzuki into second. Laverty was pushing Brookes hard but was forced to settle for third to double up on podium finishes for Samsung Honda. Lowes remained fourth for WFR Honda which has now put him inside the top six by just six points from Ian Lowry with one round remaining before the Showdown.

Hill said: "I couldn't have asked for me today; two wins was the plan and we leave here with another six podium credits so it was a great result today for the Swan Yamaha team. I pushed hard again as you can't afford to give an inch and now we are looking forward to Donington Park."

The fight for fifth was a scrap between the other riders aiming to make the Showdown cut with Tommy Bridewell holding onto fifth to maintain his position in the top six for Supersonic BMW.  He held off the second WFR Honda of James Westmoreland who carved his way up the order in the final stages to snatch sixth from Padgetts Honda's Ian Lowry, who lies just adrift of the top six in the standings in seventh place. Peter Hickman, Karl Harris and Michael Rutter completed the top ten whilst MSS Bathams Kawasaki's Danny Buchan was running fifth in the early stages until he slid off at the Mountain unhurt.
