Peter and Broniszewski Ferrari 458 fastest in first GT Open session

Friday, July 22 2011

Phillipp Peter and Michael Broniszewski were quickest in a disrupted first practice session ahead of this weekend's pair of supercar races.

The Spanish-based GT series makes its return to Brands Hatch after a successful debut last year and many of the drivers were struggling to get to grips with the Grand Prix circuit. Within 10 minutes the session was interrupted early on with cars beached in the gravel, which turned out to be the 1 and 2 AF Corse Ferraris. The number 1 car of Alessandro Garofano and Luca Rangoni had another moment at the first corner midway through, causing another halt to proceedings.

Peter and Broniszewski's Kessel Racing Ferrari 458 sat at the top for the first forty minutes of the hour-long practice session but their time was beaten by the similar car of former F1 driver Andrea Montermini and Emanuele Moncini, run by Scuderia Villorba Corse, before they retook the initiative with five minutes remaining. The time of 1:26.556 proved to be unbeatable, with Montermini and Moncini seven tenths behind.

British GT runner Glynn Geddie was taking advantage of his circuit knowledge, running strongly with Daniel Brown in the GTS class AF Corse Ferrari 458. However a highly promising third place was pipped in the final moments by several cars. Their place was taken by Peter Bamford and Alex Mortimer in the Ford GT, also running in GTS.

Fourth place fell to Nicolas DiMarco and Marcello Puglisi in the sole Mercedes SLS, whilst Lorenzo Bontempelli and Stefano Gattuso's Kessel Racing Ferrari 458 sat in fifth. Following Brown and Geddie in sixth, Stefano Bizzarri and Niki Cadei were seventh. After five GTs cars, the Super GT 458 of Miguel Ramos and Raffaele Giammaria was eighth fastest, from Alexander Talkanitsa and Alexander Talkanitsa Jr's 458 and the first Porsche, of Gianluca Roda and Fabio Babini.
