Montermini and Moncini steal pole for GT Open race one

Saturday, July 23 2011

Andrea Montermini and Emmanuele Moncini will start the first GT Open race of the weekend from pole position after a thrilling end to the qualifying session. Their place was under threat from Philipp Peter and Michael Broniszewski, plus Soheil Ayari and Nicolas Marroc. However a last gasp effort gave them the fastest time, moments after the chequered flag had fallen.

The session started with the GT3-spec GTS class cars on track and fastest was disputed between the Trackspeed car of late entry David Ashburn/Stephen Jelley, the Ferrari of Stefano Bizzarri/Niki Cadei and the Mercedes SLS of Nicolas Di Marco/Marcello Puglisi.

When the Super GT cars, in full GT2 specification arrived, they took a while to get up to speed before Miguel Ramos and Raffaele Giammaria posted the best time. Montermini and Moncini then took provisional pole and as Ayari tried to respond, he spun at Surtees. Then the number 1 Ferrari of Alessandro Garofano and Luca Rangoini came off at Paddock once more, bringing out the red flag with ten minutes to go.

Ayari quickly made amends as the track reopened but was demoted by Peter and the Kessel Racing Ferrari looked to be on pole. However Montermini rounded Clearways for the final time and stopped the clocks with a time just four hundredths quicker.

Ramos and Giammaria will start fourth, with Andrea Ceccato and Alvaro Barba's Porsche 911 fifth.
