Oulton Park Gold Cup classic ready for action

Sunday, August 28 2011

The Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting is about to get underway, with two days of historic racing planned at the Cheshire circuit for the Bank Holiday weekend (28/29 August).

Over 450 cars have been entered for the 18 race programme, starting at midday today (Sunday) with 70s Road Sports, featuring cars from TVR, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Lotus, MG and Triumph amongst other marques. A late E-Type is also entered, reflecting this year's theme celebrating 50 years of the legendary sports car.

The E-Type celebrations kicked off with a cavalcade of cars lapping the picturesque circuit, before parking on the infield, amongst over 80 car club displays featuring vehicles of all ages.

There are also two races exclusively for E-Types, part of a series that launched this year at Brands Hatch. Entries include cars for touring car champion John Cleland, racing legend Barrie Williams and motorsport pundit and historic racer Tony Jardine. Race one is at 2:25pm today and race two at 2:40pm tomorrow.

There are also races today for Historic Formula Junior cars, with separate grids for front and rear-engined variants. However, the majority of day one's action comes from sportscars, with the Guards and Martini Trophy races for '60s and '70s cars respectively. Both events feature several entries from local marque Chevron.

Classic British sports cars dominate the grid in the Historic Road Sports race, whilst there's further single seater action with the HSCC Classic Racing Cars series for Formula 2 and 3 cars from the 1960s.

There's also plenty to see away from the track, with a superb collection of rally cars on the special stage located opposite the paddock. From 1960s Mini Coopers, to Group B monsters, there's plenty to see!

Tickets for the Oulton Park Gold Cup on 28/29 August are available on the gate for £21 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
