F1 legends amongst guest drivers for DTM-supporting Scirocco-R Cup

Tuesday, August 30 2011

Volkswagen have confirmed VIP guest drivers for this Saturday's DTM-supporting Scirocco R Cup race at Brands Hatch. Last year, Johnny Herbert, Mark Blundell, Martin Brundle and Derek Bell joined a grid of championship hopefuls, providing extra spice to an entertaining race and this year will be no different!

Herbert and Blundell return to action this weekend and will be joined by Fifth Gear's Tiff Needell. The presenter has raced in Formula One, the World Sportscar Championship and British Touring Cars, so is not short of experience and will certainly be entertaining to watch.

Multiple British Rally Champion Mark Higgins switches to circuit racing after a recent appearance at Oulton Park with the Legends series. Whilst this form of motorsport calls for a smoother driving style, he will no doubt be able to demonstrate his car control skills. Mark's CV also includes stunt driving in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace but he is expected to remain on the tarmac this weekend!

Nicolas Hamilton, brother of 2008 F1 World Champion Lewis, is currently competing in his debut season of racing in the Renault Clio Cup, picking up many fans not just for his results but also his tenacity in the face of adversity. He broadens his experience this weekend with a guest drive and will be joined by father Anthony. Hamilton senior may be better known as patriarch of the racing clan but in addition to managing 2010 DTM champion Paul Di Resta, will be looking forward to experiencing a race first-hand. The role-reversal may well be completed by Lewis watching from the pitlane!

Meanwhile there is the serious business of a championship and British hopes are strong, with Daniel Lloyd currently lying second, less than a win separating him from leader Mateusz Lisowski. The 19-year old is competing in the series for the first time.

"I'm really looking forward to the weekend, it's fantastic to be back racing at home", Daniel said, "I want to go out there and win, that's my focus for the rest of the season - just try and win every race. Even though it is only my first year in the R-Cup I will be disappointed if I don't win the championship, that's my goal but it is going to be very tough. All things considered though I think we've had a really fantastic year and I'm loving every minute of it."

The cars are all powered by 2-litre turbocharged engines running on bio-natural gas and each driver has a push-to-pass boost facility that they can use 15 times. A special display on the side of the car shows how many uses of this remain, adding to the entertainment already guaranteed by this impressive line-up.

Tickets for the DTM at Brands Hatch, supported by the VW Scirocco R Cup on Saturday are available from £25, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. To book, which includes free entry to a draw to win DTM shirts and caps, call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
