Hill holds off Byrne in first practice

Saturday, August 27 2011

Swan Yamaha's Tommy Hill kept title rival Shane 'Shakey' Byrne behind him in the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session at Cadwell Park as the pair led Josh Brookes and a resurgent Ryuichi Kiyonari who was fourth fastest at his home circuit.

Hill began the session by setting the early pace, before high-flying Brookes who continued to impress the fans at the Mountain section with his sensational airborne style, took the advantage with 30 minutes remaining.

Byrne was running second throughout the session and with just over 20 minutes remaining the standings leader nearly crashed out at the bottom of the Mountain, but was able to cut across the grass before rejoining. He ended the session second fastest 0.520s adrift of rival Hill with Brookes moving back to third in the closing stages.

Kiyonari was fourth despite a spell in third until the final minute on the second of the HM Plant Hondas whilst his closest rival to steal his sixth place in the standings here this weekend, Michael Rutter was fifth. Tyco Honda's Peter Hickman moved up the order in the closing stages to sixth to displace Michael Laverty and drop the second Swan Yamaha rider to seventh with Chris Walker running eighth. James Ellison and the leading Mirror.co.uk BSB Evo rider Glen Richards rounded out the top ten. Jon Kirkham and Gary Mason who are also fighting for the final three places in the Showdown were 13th and 15th respectively.
