Paul di Resta clinches 2010 DTM crown

Monday, November 29 2010

Britain's Paul di Resta clinched his maiden DTM crown after securing a solid podium finish during the German Touring Car Championship's visit to Shanghai, China last Sunday (28 November).

Mercedes driver Di Resta arrived in the Far East lying second in the standings, however a nightmare qualifying session for championship leader Bruno Spengler gave his Scottish rival - who scooped pole position - the advantage for the final encounter of 2010.

Di Resta, who is also reserve driver for the Force India F1 team, led for the opening part of the Shanghai street race until the first pit stop window, when a slow rear tyre change allowed fellow Mercedes racer Gary Paffett through into first position.

As Paffett began to build a lead, Di Resta fought off advances from Audi duo Timo Scheider and Martin Tomczyk before the race was brought to an early conclusion following an accident involving Susie Stoddardt and Mike Rockenfeller.

Although Paffett took the spoils in Shanghai, which promoted him to second in the standings, overall honours were confirmed for Di Resta. Spengler crossed the line in thirteenth position to secure third overall.

"I am really happy about my DTM title win - a dream come true," said a jubilant Di Resta. "I thank my entire team and everybody at Mercedes-Benz for this great season."

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, added: "A difficult final of a great 2010 DTM season with Paul as the deserved champion and Gary as the Shanghai winner."

Di Resta's trophy triumph rounds out an impressive season for Mercedes, who secured nine wins from a possible 11 over rivals Audi.
