Wills and Schryver snatch last lap pre-66 Mini victory

Saturday, May 29 2010

Roger Wills and Will Schryver have taken victory in a thoroughly entertaining 45 minute Pre-66 Mini race on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit at the Masters Historic Festival today (Saturday).

Wills - who is preparing to compete in all seven races taking place at the festival on Monday - was the first of the pairing to drive, running in third for the first part of the race behind a tussling Andrew Hack and Barrie 'Whizzo' Williams.

Hack started from pole position, but Whizzo stole the lead as the field passed through Clark Curve for the first time. The pair changed places again on lap two, however Williams determinedly retook the lead through Graham Hill Bend before a sensational drive allowed the racing legend to build a comfortable lead heading into the pit stop window.

Hack was the first of the front-runners to pit, but his plans to hand over the car to former Le Mans winner Darren Turner were thwarted when the Mini developed a problem with the fan belt and the duo were forced to retire.

This promoted Wills to second place as he swapped places with team-mate Will Schryver on lap 20, whilst brothers Glyn and Nick Swift moved up into third position.

72 year old Whizzo was one of the last drivers to pit, changing places with Masters Series director Ron Maydon, who began to be reeled in by Schryver and Swift upon joining the race.

There was a slight respite for Maydon when the safety car was deployed on lap 33 after the rapid Tarry/Youles Mini went off at Clearways. However, an unfortunate misfire problem shortly after the restart allowed Schryver and Swift to pass him on the penultimate lap - Scriber taking the chequered flag by just a tenth of a second following a one lap dash to the finish by the pair.

"I'm so glad there wasn't another lap!" said Schryver following the race. "That was really good fun and I can't thank Roger enough for letting me drive his car."

Maydon and the impressive Williams held onto third place, with Mike Dowsett the quickest 'Imp'vitation runner in seventh position.
