Audi R8 LMS revs up for British GT debut at Oulton Park

Monday, March 29 2010

Oulton Park is gearing up for the UK debut of a pair of muscular Audi R8 LMS racers when the Tarporley circuit hosts the opening round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship this Easter weekend (3/5 April).

The powerful Audi supercars are run by Anglo-American team United Autosports - based in Birstall near Leeds - who will make their maiden outing on British soil this weekend before launching an assault on the FIA European GT3 Championship next month.

Piloting the Remington-backed R8 will be team co-owners Zak Brown and Richard Dean, the latter stepping in at the last minute to replace Argentinian Pablo Perez Companc, who has sidelined his plans to race after struggling in pre-season testing due to the injuries he sustained during an Indy Pro Series race in 2007.

American pairing Michael Guasch and Mark Patterson will drive the sister car for the British GT Championship's two hour-long races.

"I'm really looking forward to giving United Autosports its GT race debut having spent the winter months pulling all of the elements together with Richard - it's a very exciting program for us," said United Autosports co-owner Zak Brown. "The Oulton race also marks a new era for Audi with its maiden race in the British GT championship so it's doubly important for us all.

"I've never previously raced at Oulton but went around there many, many years ago and from what I remember it's a very difficult circuit so I expect to have my hands full," Brown concluded.

Fellow United Autosports co-owner Richard Dean added: "Pablo is having medical advice on his rehabilitation and everyone at United Autosports wishes him a speedy and full recovery. Because of the time constraints the simplest thing is for me to drive at Oulton Park then find a permanent replacement in time for the opening FIA races in May. I briefly drove the Audi R8 LMS in Portugal and it's a beautiful piece of engineering so it won't be too much of a hardship for me!

The United Autosports Audi R8s will line up alongside a host of impressive supercars this weekend including Ferraris, Aston Martins, Porsches, Dodges, Lotuses and Ginettas for two endurance races, both of which will include mandatory pit stops and driver swaps.

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship gets underway at Oulton Park on 3/5 April in a joint headline meeting with the Cooper Tires British F3 Series. Tickets are now on sale from £17 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or click on the link below.
