Kiyo doubles up as Hill struggles

Monday, June 28 2010

Tommy Hill had his lead in the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship standings dramatically cut at Mallory Park last weekend, as former double champion Ryuichi Kiyonari powered to a sensational double win for the HM Plant Honda team.

Worx Crescent Suzuki's Hill had a 34 point advantage heading into the fifth round but whilst he suffered a nightmare weekend with a single eighth place finish, nearest rival Josh Brookes racked up 40 points with two second places.

The HM Plant Honda rider is now ready to pile on the pressure as the gap is down to just four points with the Australian scoring 12 podium credits to Hill's 15, so he really closed the advantage with just four rounds to go until the Showdown which begins after the Cadwell Park round on August Bank Holiday weekend.

Michael Laverty took another two podium finishes for the Relentless Suzuki by TAS team, and he also halved the points between himself and leader Hill, whilst with his double race win Kiyonari stormed inside the top four overall, 26 points adrift of the Worx Crescent Suzuki rider.

Stuart Easton though dropped outside the top six for the first time this season after a fifth place on the Swan Honda and a crash in race two, and he wants to make amends at Knockhill this weekend.

MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship standings after Mallory Park:

1. Tommy Hill (Worx Crescent Suzuki) 154
2. Josh Brookes (HM Plant Honda) 150
3. Michael Laverty (Relentless Suzuki by TAS) 133
4. Ryuichi Kiyonari (HM Plant Honda) 128
5. Michael Rutter (Ridersmotorcycles.com Ducati) 114
