Colin Turkington revs up for tin top racing return this weekend

Monday, June 28 2010

Reigning British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington will return to the track for the first time since clinching the BTCC title last October this weekend (3/4 July) when he enters the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Portimao, Portugal as part of a three round wild card deal with West Surrey Racing BMW.

"I've had two days in the car to bring me up to speed again and fine tune the car's WTCC set-up on Yokohama tyres, and I think were in good shape for Portimao," said Turkington. "It's a new track for me so I've got a bit of work to do to learn the circuit for this weekend."

Turkington's journey will then continue on home soil in less than three weeks' time when the WTCC arrives at Brands Hatch for a double headline meeting with the FIA Formula Two Championship, and the Ulsterman has a strong record at the Kent venue.

In 2007 he scored a WTCC podium finish in a wild card entry - also with WSR - and last season he clinched his first BTCC drivers' title on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit following a tense battle with the Racing Silverline Chevrolet of Jason Plato.

"Both myself and the team will come to Brands Hatch feeling confident because we have good experience of the circuit and the BMW always seems to go well," Turkington added. "I'm pleased I'll be racing there because it gives fans a chance to come along and see me race again - I always receive good support and that gives me extra motivation to perform well."

This week Turkington received a pre-race boost after WSR confirmed new backing from eBay Motors, the UK's largest automotive marketplace, which also sponsors the squad in the British Touring Car Championship.

"We have been supporting the WSR team in the BTCC this year and we're delighted to be able to extend that," said Andrew Hooks from eBay Motors. "Europe is a very strong marketplace for us and we feel like the FIA WTCC, along with WSR and Colin, will provide us with a great platform."

Tickets for the FIA World Touring Car and Formula Two Championships at Brands Hatch on 16/17/18 July are available now from £24 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or click on the link below.
