'Eddie the Eagle' switches mascot outfit for crash helmet

Friday, June 25 2010

'Eddie the Eagle,' the official mascot of Colchester United Football Club, soared into Brands Hatch yesterday for some flying laps in the RaceMaster BMW M3 and Formula Brands single seater.

Eddie impressed instructor John Langridge with the improvement made during the session and his smooth driving style, scoring a total of 72 points out of 100.

After a sighting lap with the instructor in the BMW M3, the Eagle was then unleashed behind the wheel for 20 minutes before hopping into the Formula Brands single seater, setting a best lap time around the Indy circuit of 1m08.824s.

Eddie's day was completed with a flying passenger lap back in the BMW M3.

Speaking afterwards Eddie commented; "It was definitely more challenging than gearing the crowd up before a big game! Going round the first bend put my stomach in my mouth! I dont think I quite reached 100mph but I could really feel it!"

Eddie then claimed that the Colchester players, currently gearing up for a season in League One, could be interested in a possible career change.

"I want to come back and bring some friends and the team down they would love to have a go, we could have a Colchester United Grand Prix! The competition between the players would be terrific."
