Sevilla FC scores maiden Superleague Formula pole position

Saturday, July 31 2010

Sevilla FC scored a surprise maiden pole position for the first of Sunday's Superleague Formula by Sonangol races on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

The Spanish squad's car, piloted by Marcos Martinez, beat Beijing Guoan machine of John Martin - which looked to be odds-on favourite after performing strongly throught the build-up stages of qualifying - in the final shootout.

Martinez set a quickest lap time of 1m13.566s - just two hundredths of a second faster than his Australian rival.

Semi Finals
Sevilla advanced to the final after Martinez outpaced Tottenham Hotspur's Craig Dolby by two tenths of a second.

Martin then clinched the second available place by beating Sporting Clube de Portugal's Andy Soucek. The Spaniard will start from third on the grid tomorrow ahead of Dolby.

Quarter Finals
Spurs were the first confirmed semi-finalist when Dolby beat Girondins de Bordeaux's Franck Montagny by a commanding eight tenths of a second, whilst Beijing sailed through when Martin's opponent AS Roma's Julien Jousse pulled off the track after his AS Roma car suffered mechanical problems.

Soucek knocked out Olympiacos' Chris Van Der Drift by less than two tenths of a second, before AC Milan's Yelmer Buurman threw away his chances of pole position when he ran wide through the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend in the final outing. Buurman's mistake gifted the last semi final place to Sevilla's Martinez.

Group stages
It was the Spurs car of Craig Dolby, along with Beijing's John Martin, that set the pace in the opening stages of the qualifying competition.

Martin led the Group A contest ahead of Marcos Martinez, with Andy Soucek in third. A last gasp effort by Franck Montagny qualified Girondins de Bordeaux for the next round on his final flying lap, knocking out Galatasary's Tristan Gommandy in the process.

In Group B, Dolby fended off strong competition from Olympiacos and AC Milan's Yelmer Buurman, whilst the AS Roma car of Julien Jousse completed the quartet of qualifiers.

Early qualifying casualties included Liverpool FC's James Walker and PSV Eindhoven's Narain Karthikeyan.

Race one gets underway at 11.00am.
