AC Milan nets quickest time in opening Superleague free practice

Saturday, July 31 2010

Championship leader AC Milan's Yelmer Buurman topped the timesheets in the opening free practice session for Superleague Formula by Sonangol at Brands Hatch today (Saturday).

Buurman netted the quickest lap time in the dying moments of the 30 minute practice, which marked Superleague Formula's debut outing around the 2.3-mile Grand Prix circuit. The session proved challenging to many drivers due to the combination of an unfamiliar circuit and a drying track surface.

"It was a difficult session as the track was quite slippery," said Buurman. "I know this was just first practice but it was good to finish on top."

Beijing Guoan's John Martin clinched the second quickest time after setting the pace for most of the session, whilst Olympiacos pilot Chris Van Der Drift secured third fastest.

FC Basel's Max Wissel made a solid start to the weekend in fourth place ahead of the AS Roma car of Julien Jousse, who survived a trip through the gravel at Stirling's Bend to finish fifth.

Sporting Clube de Portugal driver Andy Soucek set the sixth quickest time after struggling for grip on the damp track, with Galatasaray's Tristan Gommendy in seventh.

Girondins de Bordeaux's Frank Montagny secured eighth fastest position before ending his session in the gravel at Clearways, whilst Olympique Lyonnais pilot Franck Perera also went off at Stirling's in the final stages.

British squads Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur rounded out the top ten, with drivers James Walker and Craig Dolby finishing just two tenths of a second apart.

The session was interrupted halfway through by a red flag when Narain Karthikeyan's PSV Eindhoven vehicle suffered a collapsed rear suspension on the run down to Graham Hill Bend.

Free practice two gets underway at 1.00pm.
