Double R Racing joins grid for 2016 BRDC Formula 4 Championship

Tuesday, December 01 2015

Prominent single-seater team Double R Racing has committed to the BRDC Formula 4 Championship by purchasing three Tatuus-Cosworth cars ahead of the 2016 season.

Woking-based Double R Racing currently competes in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship and MSA Formula in the UK, and previously ran most notably in British Formula 3, winning the drivers' championship in 2006 with future IndyCar race winner Mike Conway. The team has helped progress the careers of a number of highly successful drivers in addition to Conway, including Formula One graduates Bruno Senna and current Sauber F1 drivers Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson.

Double R was originally founded by then McLaren Formula One driver Kimi Räikkönen and his manager Steve Robertson in 2004 as Räikkönen Robertson Racing, before Anthony 'Boyo' Hieatt assumed the running of the team in November 2010, leading to a name change.

Hieatt, Team Principal of Double R Racing, said: "We're delighted to join BRDC F4 in readiness for next season and will be running three cars in our first year. Drivers are raving about the new car and they're right to - it's fast, very good from an engineering and team perspective to work with and also pretty close to F3, which is obviously perfect for drivers looking to progress up the ladder.

"With the new car, BRDC F4 has become the natural replacement for British F3 and everyone at Double R is looking forward to joining an MSV run championship. We've never worked with Jonathan Palmer's organisation before, but I have known Giles Butterfield [MSV Group Operations Manager] a long time and he's done a great job with the series.

"The calendar looks good, we always love racing at tracks like Oulton Park and Silverstone and it's good for the drivers to have a circuit like Spa on there too. It'll be a good challenge coming up against teams we haven't raced against before, and also continuing the friendly rivalry we've had over many years in F3 with the likes of Fortec and Carlin. We can't wait to get going."

Jonathan Palmer, MSV Chief Executive and BRDC Formula 4 Series Director, commented: "The announcement that Double R has committed to join BRDC F4, with the purchase of three cars, is further endorsement of our decision to reposition the championship as the perfect stepping stone between FIA F4 and F3. Double R has achieved an enormous amount since its inception in 2005, including British F3 title success and victory at the Macau Grand Prix with Mike Conway in 2006, and I'm delighted to add another to our list of prestigious teams.

"Their participation also means that all 26 Tatuus-Cosworth cars have now been allocated ahead of the 2016 season and we are looking forward to one of the strongest and most competitive years of racing in the championship's history."
