Bumper supercar grid to take on Snetterton this weekend

Wednesday, August 19 2015

A total of 31 supercars will line up for the penultimate rounds of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Snetterton this weekend (22/23 August), which features two one-hour races on the 300 circuit.

Two championships will be fought out, with the GT3 title at the front of the grid contested by the reigning champion Ecurie Ecosse team's BMW Z4, and two former title-winning squads; the Aston Martins of Beechdean AMR and Oman Racing Team. The Triple Eight BMW Z4 also has a shot of the crown having finished a competitive second at Brands Hatch last time out.

Other entries to look out for include the VonRyanRacing McLaren 650S with the Woking marque's young drivers Ross Wylie and Andrew Watson, and the FF Corse Ferrari with GP2 race-winner Adam Carroll at the wheel. Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen's Barwell Team Russia BMW Z4 should also be in the fight for victory this weekend.

In the GT4 class for unmodified supercars, Beechdean's junior team, with teenagers Jamie Chadwick and Ross Gunn sharing driving duties, could take the championship this weekend. There's a close battle for second, however, with the Optimum Motorsport Ginetta pairing of Mike Robinson and Graham Johnson just one point ahead of ISSY Racing's Gavan Kershaw and Oz Yusuf. The latter's Lotus Evora failed to finish at Brands Hatch, dealing a major blow to their title ambitions, but they'll be aiming to restore pride at Lotus's home circuit.

Meanwhile David Pattison and Luke Davenport, who won the GT4 class at Brands Hatch, are just 15 points adrift of second place. With 50 on offer this weekend, will be working hard to bridge the gap, with Davenport also racing on home ground. However the Fox Motorsport Ginetta G55, which took pole position last time out, could be a dark horse this weekend, with Fulvio Mussi substituting for Paul McNeilly and joining Jamie Stanley for Snetterton.

The race will be one of the fastest at Snetterton this year, with the cars reaching speeds in excess of 150mph on the Senna and Bentley straights. Both races will include a pit stop for driver changes, and with just 30 minutes for each driver to make the difference, the Snetterton rounds should be frenetic.

The event is co-headlined by the BRDC Formula 4 Championship and there are support races from the Ginetta GT5 Challenge, VW Racing Cup, Porsche Club GB Championship and the Northern Sports and Saloon Car Championship.
