Jaafar celebrates British F3 return by stealing pole from King

Saturday, August 10 2013

Malaysian Jazeman Jaafar took pole position away from Carlin team mate Jordan King in a tense end to qualifying for the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series at Brands Hatch today (Saturday). Carlin drivers dominated the front of the grid, taking the first four places, with Double R's Antonio Giovinazzi beating the first of the Fortec entries in sixth place.

Fortec's championship leader Will Buller opened the qualifying session with the fastest time before returnee Jaafar and yesterday's pacesetter King lapped under a minute and 20 seconds. King's lap was four tenths slower than his Friday pace but he then posted a time two tenths quicker than he had previously managed.

Nicolas Latifi offered some opposition to King with a time under four tenths slower but at the halfway stage it seemed as though no one could beat Jordan to pole position.

The action became more intense in the final ten minutes when most drivers left the pitlane for a final assault on pole position. Antonio Giovinazzi was the first to improve, demoting Buller down to seventh place, whilst Jann Mardenborough posted a faster time but gained no places.

Jaafar was also attempting to improve but his first effort merely trimmed his best time. His next attempt was much better and gave King something to think about as he was just three hundredths slower. He continued to light up the timing screen with fast sector times and took pole position by nearly eight thousandths of a second.

King had just two minutes to respond but whilst he was unable to match his earlier times at first, he redoubled his effort. Jaafar still had something in hand, however and lowered the benchmark, holding onto pole position by more than a tenth.

Behind them Latifi and Mardenborough were third and fourth quickest from Giovinazzi, Felipe Guimaraes and Will Buller. Ed Jones was the fastest National Class qualifier. Race one will take place at 14:55 today.
