BTCC Race 1: Shedden storms to first win of the year

Sunday, October 10 2021

Halfords Racing with Cataclean's Gordon Shedden took his first race win of the season in the opening BTCC contest of the weekend at Donington Park.

The Scotsman, driving a Honda Civic Type R, converted his first pole of the year into a lights to flag victory, holding off the attentions of Power Maxed Vauxhall's Dan Lloyd.

Lloyd pursued Shedden for the duration of the race, especially close in the opening half of the contest and ultimately finished 1.3 seconds adrift of the triple champion.

Rory Butcher gave Toyota something to cheer about at the manufacturer's local round with third place, finishing two tenths of a second ahead of Senna Proctor in the BTC Racing Honda Civic.

Team BMW's Colin Turkington was fifth after passing Jason Plato for the position late in the race. Plato was shuffled down to fifth from third on the grid on the first lap, and then fell back into the clutches of the Northern Irishman.

Plato finished just under a second away from Turkington and a quarter of a second ahead of reigning double champion Ash Sutton in the Infiniti Q50. Sutton, fully loaded with 75kg of success ballast could only climb two places from his ninth place starting position, with Josh Cook doing the same from 10th to eighth.

Chris Smiley's Hyundai i30N was ninth, ahead of Ford driver Ollie Jackson, who completed the top-10.

Championship contender Tom Ingram was 11th, while Jake Hill, third in the championship heading into the event was 17th after being involved in a spectacular early shunt with Adam Morgan's BMW at Starkey's.

Shedden commented: "It's fantastic and great to see the smiles back on the whole team. We've never got the momentum this season, but what a reward, and it makes the bad times seem better."
