Bennetts BSB Showdown intensifies ahead of Donington Park

Monday, September 27 2021

The Bennetts British Superbike Championship battle took a dramatic turn at Oulton Park ahead of the penultimate event of the Showdown at Donington Park this weekend (1-3 October).

Tarran Mackenzie now leads the standings after seizing the championship lead from McAMS Yamaha teammate Jason O'Halloran, whilst Tommy Bridewell strengthened his title charge with a double victory in Cheshire. Three more races around the East Midlands circuit's longer Grand Prix circuit will now set the scene ahead of the championship finale at Brands Hatch later this month (15-17 October).

O'Halloran would have been many people's pick for the title ahead of the three-event Showdown, following a superlative Main Season, during which he won 11 races. However, the Australian dramatically crashed out of the lead in the opening race at Oulton Park, opening the door for Mackenzie to begin eroding his lead.

Second place in race two settled O'Halloran's weekend, but another crash in race three put him on the back foot, as third and fifth place results allowed Mackenzie to move to the top of the standings by just two points.

Bridewell is right in the hunt too, just seven points further behind after his double heroics on Sunday. The Oxford Products Racing Ducati rider recovered from 13th to claim a dramatic victory in the second race of the weekend before dominating in the final contest.

Christian Iddon is 33 points behind the overall lead in fourth ahead of the Donington Park event, with Peter Hickman a further 10 adrift in fifth. Josh Brookes climbed up to sixth after just sneaking into the Showdown at the final round of the Main Season. The reigning champion continued his impressive resurgence at Oulton Park with pole position and a pair of second places. Danny Buchan and Glenn Irwin will both be charging hard to improve their championship position and keep their championship hopes alive.

Sunday tickets for the Bennetts British Superbike Championship Showdown at Donington Park are available from £32 in advance with a discount for 13-15-year-olds and FREE entry for under-13s. For more information, please call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
