Lotus Formula One car added to Masters Festival demonstrations

Tuesday, May 24 2011

Nelson Piquet's 1989 Lotus Formula One car has been confirmed as a late addition to the demonstration runs at this weekend's Masters Historic Festival (28-30 May). The car joins a superb line-up that features Damon Hill's 1996 title-winning Williams and several cars from the Benetton team and its predecessor Toleman.

The 1989 Lotus 101, powered by the Judd V8 engine after turbos were banned from F1, was designed by Frank Dernie and Mike Coughlan, who has recently returned to competition with the Williams team. Piquet and team mate Satoru Nakajima campaigned the car, with the three-time World Champion scoring two fourth places, including one at the Japanese Grand Prix where McLaren team mates Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost famously clashed. That race was won by Benetton and history repeated itself the following year with Piquet now in the team and benefitting from another incident between the championship rivals. The winning car from that race will also be on track during the demonstration runs.

Team Lotus then began a decline that saw them leave the sport in the mid-1990s, and their trajectory dovetailed with the rise of Benetton, who later evolved into Renault, which is now sponsored by Group Lotus.

Benetton's acquisition of Toleman was helped by the exploits of future champion Ayrton Senna in 1984, when he almost won the Monaco Grand Prix, and it is one of that year's cars that will now be demonstrated from the team's early days. During that season Senna also scored a third place in the British Grand Prix, held at Brands Hatch.
