Simon Deacon secures first victory in Lotus Cup UK

Sunday, March 20 2011

Simon Deacon took advantage of a mid race safety car period to snatch a dramatic win in the inaugural Lotus Cup UK one-hour race at Snetterton today.

Mark Speller in the Lotus 340R had built up a handy lead having led from pole, but a safety car brought out after another competitor had stopped on the entry to the quick Hamilton corner closed the field up. Speller was already encountering difficulties due to an apparent gearbox problem, but with several drivers snapping at his heels, he was unable to keep hold of his lead, having to drive conservatively in order to make the finish.

That allowed Deacon's 2-Eleven to move past into the lead with Pete Storey driving a similar machine following through into second place.

Denis van den Savel finished third on the road, but made his compulsory pit stop after the window period had closed and was subsequently dropped to fourth, moving Speller into the final podium place.

The safety car also caught out the Exige Cup car of Jamie Stanley and Glen Sherwood who looked on course for the podium only to finish seventh. The brother pairing of David and Rob Fenn were also caught out and had to settle for eighth.
