Brands Hatch safety day raises money for local hospital

Monday, February 21 2011

With the racing season fast approaching, Brands Hatch held a road safety weekend at the circuit on 19/20 February and invited medical crews from various racing organisations and clubs in order to coach extrication techniques and safety theory.

Units from Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, MotorSport Vision Racing, the BRSCC (South East and East Anglian), BARC (South East) and the 750 Motor Club all attended, and helped to raise funds for a flat screen TV for the communal room at the Dolphin Ward at Chatham Maritime Hospital. At least one of the crews will be in attendance at every Brands Hatch event in 2011.

On Saturday the crews were instructed on the theory behind safe driver extrication, with guest speaker John Grant, who had a sizeable accident at the Masters Historic Festival in May last year. Neurosurgeon Dr Victoria Wykes was also in attendance to discuss spinal injuries and brain damage.

The theory was put into practice on Sunday, with each team handed various incident scenarios seen at racing circuits, and dealing with them accordingly.

A number of scrap vehicles were also provided by local merchants so that the crews could practice safe driver extrication.

Event organiser Andy Lyle said: "My thanks go to Hartley Breakers, D&G Cars and Aylesford Metal Company for providing the cars for the crews to practice with.

"It was a successful day with the crews learning how to safely extricate drivers from their cars in the event of an incident at the same time as raising a good sum for Chatham Maritime Hospital."

The first event of the 2011 season at Brands Hatch is the BMCRC Club Bike Championships on 5-6 March. Tickets are available for £10 with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information or to book tickets call 0843 453 9000 or click the link below.
