10 things to look forward to in 2020

Wednesday, January 01 2020

From everyone at MSV, we wish you a Happy New Year! The turning of the calendar means the new race season is fast approaching, and we've got so much to look forward to over the next 12 months. Here's just some of the highlights we can't wait for in 2020!

New faces and returning heroes in Bennetts British Superbikes
Reigning champion Scott Redding's departure from the series means there could be a new champion crowned in 2020! Josh Brookes, the 2015 winner, is the only champion remaining on the grid, so he will surely start as the favourite after running Redding close in the former MotoGP ace's debut season. This could be a golden opportunity for Christian Iddon, though, as he joins the Be Wiser Ducati squad alongside Brookes, replacing Redding. Tommy Bridewell enjoyed his best ever BSB season last year, and will surely challenge again as he remains with the Oxford Racing Ducati team, while young guns Tarran Mackenzie, Danny Buchan and Bradley Ray will aim to add to their win tallies. There are eight MSV rounds to look forward to in 2020, including double visits to Donington Park, Brands Hatch and Oulton Park.

Will Turkington make it five in the BTCC?
Colin Turkington secured his fourth BTCC title in ever dramatic style in 2019, but can he secure his fifth in 2020? Honda's Dan Cammish will be back this year, and was a lap and a half from the title in 2019 - if he can add a few more wins, he could be a force to be reckoned with. Turkington will also have to deal with returning teammate Andrew Jordan, who was second in the championship last year despite missing races at Donington through injury. Armed, like Turkington, with the BMW 330i M Sport, he will also be looking to make amends! There will again be five BTCC rounds at MSV venues in 2020, with the season starting at Donington on 28-29 March.

WorldSBK returns for another treble at Donington Park
The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship returns to Donington Park on 3-5 July, but can anyone stop Jonathan Rea's march to yet another title? For a while in 2019, it looked as if Alvaro Bautista was finally going to end Rea's championship streak, but the second half of the Spaniard's season was nowhere near as promising as the start. The Donington round proved pivotal to the championship battle, as a treble win for Rea and troubles for Bautista saw Rea take the lead of the championship for the first time in the season, and he held it until the end. Bautista has switched to Honda for 2020, with his place at Ducati taken by BSB champion Redding, who will aim to make as much of an impact in World Superbikes as he did on the domestic paddock. Donington locals Leon Haslam and Alex Lowes have also made team switches; Lowes partners Rea at Kawasaki, while Haslam has jumped to Honda.

DTM and W Series back at Brands Hatch
The world's fastest touring cars are back again at Brands Hatch, for another summer spectacular on the Grand Prix circuit on 22-23 August. Awesome high-tech machines from Audi, BMW and Aston Martin will do battle, with the cars producing 600bhp and reaching speeds of up to 180mph in one of our fastest races of the season! Also returning is the popular female-only W Series, which took the motorsport world by storm in 2019! Featuring F3-style single seaters, the racing proved to be superb last year, with Britain's Jamie Chadwick winning the title and the cool $500,000 cheque that came with it!  Look out also for a busy support race package, guaranteeing a weekend full of high-speed thrills.

GT World Challenge Europe returns
The planet's leading supercar manufacturers will do battle again at Brands Hatch on 2-3 May, with marques represented including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG, Audi, Porsche and more! This is the first event of the season for the category, so each will be looking to get their 2020 campaign off to a flying start on the Grand Prix circuit, with two one-hour headline races to look forward to. The high calibre machinery attracts an equally top-class driver line-up, with former F1 stars and Le Mans aces likely to be among the entry.

Multiple British GT and F3 rounds at MSV circuits
The British GT Championship is in the rudest of health, and will race at MSV circuits five times in 2020, with two visits to Donington. The category was exceptional in 2019, with entries from Aston Martin, Audi, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG plus others, and there will be more of the same this time around, with well over 30 cars likely again! Meanwhile, F1 hopefuls will once more go wheel to wheel in the BRDC British F3 Championship, which boasts a new-look car for the new year. Expect fierce action and plenty of drama from an international line-up of drivers.

Roll back the years with historic racing
MSV continues to be blessed with superb historic race meetings at all its venues, covering both cars and bikes. Major highlights include the Donington Historic Festival in May, the Oulton Park Gold Cup in August and Masters Historic meetings at Brands Hatch and Donington Park, and the HSCC Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix. Look out too for VSCC Vintage Motorsport Festivals at Cadwell Park and Oulton Park. For bikes, there's the Classic Motorcycle Festival at Donington Park and International Sidecar Revival at Cadwell Park, plus numerous club level events for classic machines.

Stars and Stripes at SpeedFest!
American SpeedFest 8 will bring glitz, glamour and razzmatazz to the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on 6-7 June, with supercharged action from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series the highlight of a frenzied weekend of all American action! As well as the awesome on track action, bolstered by sports cars and saloons, there's a ram-jammed package of entertainment all around the circuit for the whole family, with live music, a smokin' Live Action Arena, food areas, grid walks, driving experiences and big displays too.

Loads more themed festivals
All your favourite festivals will return again in 2020, including the Mini Festival at Brands Hatch on 8-9 August and Festival Italia on 16 August, bringing its usual mix of Carbonara, Calzone and Carburettors! The massive Convoy in the Park festival will also return for a third year at Donington Park on 22-23 August - one of Europe's biggest celebrations of truck racing and life on the road. This mammoth family fun event features multiple truck races, a fully loaded support race card, and a huge variety of entertainment around the venue including a Live Action Arena with stunt shows, a big central stage and live music too.

Trucks and fireworks to end the year with a bang!
The final round of the British Truck Racing Championship will again take place at Brands Hatch on 7-8 November, accompanied with one of the South East's biggest and best firework displays! The final round always has lots at stake, so arrive early for some of the best racing you'll see from the biggest racing machines going, and stay late to be dazzled by provocative pyrotechnics! As well as the Brands Hatch spectacular, the racing trucks will also race at Brands Hatch earlier in the year, as well as making visits to Donington (see Convoy in the Park above) and to Snetterton too.
