Rea romps to Imola WorldSBK double

Monday, May 13 2019

Alvaro Bautista's dominance of the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship finally came to a halt at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari at the weekend (11-12 May) as Kawasaki's Jonathan Rea claimed his first two wins of the year.

Bautista had never competed at the Imola circuit before, and Rea took full advantage to claim his first victory from pole position by almost eight seconds from Ducati's Bautista, with Toprak Razgatlioglu third on his Kawasaki.

Rea then made it a double with victory in the Superpole Race on Sunday morning, this time with a margin of just over two seconds from Chaz Davies, who bumped his Ducati teammate Bautista down to third.

The reigning champion's hopes of claiming a triple win were dashed when the final race was cancelled after a downpour flooded the circuit and rendered racing impossible.

Rea commented: "It was a really positive weekend, to get my feeling with the bike here and be able to really get the maximum out of it. To pick up two race wins makes me really happy. I want to thank all the team for always believing and keeping on pushing. We never stopped believing that this weekend was a perfect opportunity for the chance to win. With our form here in the past, the way our bike works here and the way I ride - it was our chance. So we had to take it and I did, in both races. That was positive but unfortunately race three was cancelled because of the weather which came in. I completely understand and I am sure we will get our chance again."

The double victory for Rea means Bautista's championship lead has been reduced to 43 points ahead of the next round for the series at Jerez on 7-9 June. The Rimini round then follows ahead of the only UK round at Donington Park on 5-7 July.

Tickets for the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park are available in advance priced from £25 for adults with free entry for children under-13. For more information and to book, click here.
