Day crowned King of Brands on mega SpeedFest V Sunday

Sunday, June 11 2017

Israeli star Alon Day ruled the roost in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series' (NWES) headline race on SpeedFest V today (Sunday) as the venue and its surrounds were transformed into a scene from Daytona Beach for the weekend.

Day claimed his crown after winning this afternoon's headline NWES race to cement his status as the most successful Elite 1 class driver of the weekend. He was joined on the podium by Frederic Gabillon and 1991 Formula Ford Festival winner Marc Goossens, whilst reigning two-time champion Anthony Kumpen dropped to seventh after yesterday's win.

Further back, 2000 NASCAR champion and stock car legend Bobby Labonte stormed through the field from the back of the grid to finish tenth on his first weekend racing in the UK. Labonte was the key mover and shaker throughout the race, overtaking cars left, right, and centre as to hustle a fantastic result.

Following the race, the drivers headed out to Victory Lane amongst the fans to celebrate their success, with Labonte and Goossens joining American MCE British Superbike Championship rider James Rispoli for a t-shirt giveaway with the fans.

Thomas Ferrando was victorious in the Elite 2 NWES race later in the day.

As ever, American SpeedFest provided the Kent circuit with much more than just a race event, with cars packing the venue's surrounds in a series of Route 66-style parking lots. Special areas included a Fast & Furious display, alongside a series of other movie cars, whilst Disney Junior's Mickey and the Roadster Racers had an official presence too with a model car and Mickey ears handouts.

The Hollywood theme extended to the circuit itself too, with a unique Blues Brothers car chase and dance, as well as Fast & Furious-inspired drift shows and performances featuring stunt performer Zarene Dallas.

Other on-track showcases included appearances from genuine NASCAR and IndyCar machines, mini NASCARs, historic stock cars, and much more.

To finish proceedings, a rolling American motorcade took to the circuit for an end-of-day parade featuring many of the American cars which had filled the venue since the early hours of the morning.

This was the first of three major themed events to celebrate a nation's motoring and heritage at Brands Hatch with Festival Italia (13 August) and Deutsche Fest (19-20 August) to follow later in the summer. Each event feature themed food, stalls, and displays to complement the on-track show.
